چکیده

The properties of carbon nanotubes can be dramatically altered by the presence of defects. In this work we address the properties of two different kinds of defective nanotubes: junctions of achiral tubes with topological defects and partially unzipped carbon nanotubes. In particular, we begin by focussing on the interface states in carbon nanotube junctions between achiral tubes. We show that their number and energies can be derived by applying the Born–von Karman boundary condition to an interface between armchairand zigzag-terminated semi-infinite graphene layers. We show that these interface states, which were thought to be due to the presence of topological defects, are in fact related to the graphene zigzag edge states. Secondly, we study partially unzipped carbon nanotubes, which can be considered as the junction of a carbon nanotube and a graphene nanoribbon, which has edge features giving rise to novel properties. Carbon nanoribbons act as transparent contacts for nanotubes and viceversa, yielding a high conductance. At certain energies, nanoribbons behave as valley filters for carbon nanotubes; this holds considering electron–electron interaction effects. Furthermore, the application of a magnetic field turns the system conducting, with a 100% magnetoresistance. These novel structures may open a way for new carbon-based devices.

Graphene oxide nanoribbons and their applications in supercapacitors

We report the enhanced capacitance of the Multi-Walled Carbon NanoTubes (MWCNTs) after a chemical unzipping process in concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and potassium permanganate (KMnO4). The effects of the test duration and temperature were investigated on the unzipping process of the MWCNTs to synthesize the graphene oxide nanoribbons. The SEM and TEM studies were carried out on untreated a...

Growth of carbon nanotubes via twisted graphene nanoribbons

Carbon nanotubes have long been described as rolled-up graphene sheets. It is only fairly recently observed that longitudinal cleavage of carbon nanotubes, using chemical, catalytical and electrical approaches, unzips them into thin graphene strips of various widths, the so-called graphene nanoribbons. In contrast, rolling up these flimsy ribbons into tubes in a real experiment has not been pos...

Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts based on Winged Carbon Nanotubes

Developing electrocatalysts with both high selectivity and efficiency for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical for several applications including fuel cells and metal-air batteries. In this work we developed high performance electrocatalysts based on unique winged carbon nanotubes. We found that the outer-walls of a special type of carbon nanotubes/nanofibers, when selectively oxidiz...

Synthesis of carbon nanotubes by rolling up patterned graphene nanoribbons using selective atomic adsorption.

We demonstrate a new method (U.S. Patent Appl., serial no. 60/908039) for synthesizing carbon nanotubes (CNTs), using first-principles and classical molecular dynamics simulations. The single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) are formed by folding graphene nanoribbons patterned on graphite films through adsorption of atoms of varying coverage, which introduces an external stress to drive the folding pro...
